In an exclusive one-on-one interview given to Gladiator Magazine, Fabricio Werdum, the man who shocked the world by beating Fedor Emelianenko by submission choke in just over a minute in Strikeforce on June 26, explained why Fedor was so open to his bottom triangle.

"I had trained for months about how to get Fedor to the ground," Werdum said. "I had watched tapes of all his fights in Pride against jiu-jitsu fighters hundreds of times. I didn't want to stand with him and our team had come up with four different ways that we were going to get him on the ground. When he punched me in the beginning of the fight it glanced off my shoulder and the force of it pushed me back, but it didn't really hurt me because it didn't land flush. So I was fine but it looked like I was hurt. Then when he came forward I thought it was a great chance to take the fight to the ground early and so I went to my back."

"Fedor is a finisher," continued Werdum. "That is one of the reasons he has been on top for so long. When he senses someone is hurt he will go in for the kill. But in this case he thought I was hurt but I wasn't. So when he was punching at me so aggressively on the ground and extending his arms and exposing his neck it gave me the perfect chance to lock in the triangle. Fedor is a very smart fighter. If he didn't think I was hurt then I don't think he would have exposed himself so much."

"I was very happy to win by using a technique," Werdum also revealed. "If I had stood with him and traded punches and then maybe happened to land a big blow and knock him out then people would have said that it was just luck that I won. But they can't say that now because I used a very good jiu-jitsu technique to win by skill. "

Werdum also said that he was open to a rematch. "Of course I would fight him again. He is a great fighter who has helped the sport to grow all around the world and he deserves that and a lot more. But I work for Strikeforce and it is ultimately up to them who I fight and when. Now it maybe looks that Overeem might be my next fight. But that won't happen for a while so right now I'm just enjoying life and giving semiars and teaching at my schools. I'm going to take it easy for a while."
